Video of the Week: Maleficent Horns

So this is something new we wanted to try. There are always new YouTube videos that I think “That’s amazing!” and want to share. Most of them are DIY’s but we may mix it up now and then! When I saw this video I knew it had to be the first. Threadbanger was the first (that’s right the FIRST) DIY channel on YouTube so they know what they’re doin’. Enjoy!

PS. I promise I’m (Mel) working on a new cosplay starter kit. It’s just taking a liiiiiiitle more time than I planned on. lol

Teen Wolf Bingo Results and Review

20140223-204212.jpg
So hey! Double bingo! That’s the only happy thing to come from this episode. Because this episode was THE WORST. Like, so bad for my mental health, you don’t even know.

Kira is so badass. I know I say this every episode but I love her I love how she’s fitting in so easily with everyone and is a help to her new friends.

Stiles is missing again and seeing everyone torn up over it and listen, if Stiles ever doubted people and heir affection for him, here’s proof he is greatly loved. From the minute he reappears, I was worried it wasn’t really Stiles. Scott’s easy acceptance broke my heart. Because he just wants his best friend back so, so bad.

DEATON! I didn’t realize he knew anything of what was going on with Stiles. Did I miss that bit? I’m so happy he’s actively searching for a cure to getting rid of this demon.

I’m not sure what’s keeping Isaac from healing but I suspect it’s magical. It’s lovely to see Scott there supporting his friend even though his ex girlfriend is here too. I had my doubts about Scott in the first season, but I just really love him. He’s grown as a character a lot. I think breaking up with Allison really helped too. I just want all the good things for true alpha Scott McCall.

Derek and papa argent working together? Ok, I’m here for it. I’ve always been sympathetic for Chris. He didn’t know so much about he evil roots of his family tree. I don’t like the idea that he continues to carry blame at all. And I like to think Derek has stopped the blame too (even if he still retains the suspicion). But Derek saving Chris’s life after clearly stating he wouldn’t? Wahhh.

FINSTOCK. how could they hurt my lovely Finstock?! I need next episode showing he’s okay. OR ELSE.
Through all of this, however, I kept wondering at demon!Stiles’s plans. The shooting of Finstock, the wrapped gift on the bus, and the end when the package for Sheriff turned out to be the bomb…does anyone else think the real Stiles is in there trying to fight the demon? Because it seems like he created these diversions to keep his friends/family away from the police station. So I’m hoping he’s in there fighting to get out.

The very end of the episode is what got to me the most (surprise surprise). From the moment Stiles was going into the animal clinic I thought DO NOT GO IN THERE WITH HIM. I just knew. knew something was going down. And holy crap, the shift from regular Stiles to Demon Stiles was amazing. Dylan O’Brien is such a gifted actor. My hat off to that guy, holy wow. He has these subtle shifts in facial expressions that just make the biggest difference. All of the goofy high school kid is gone. And all that is left is a crazy demon that feeds on pain. GAH.

there is a bit of a silver lining here though (hopefully). With DEATON showing up and administering the “antidote” I’m hoping for Stiles’s swift recovery. Though I’m really worried about the repercussions of everything. Because no way this doesn’t get traced back to him. AND THEN WHAT. and then I die, obviously.

Fashion Tutu Tutorial With Hand Sew Option

ABM_1391542905

Hello there!

This tutorial has been a long time coming so let’s get to it!

List of supplies:

  • 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 yards of lining fabric. I love using knit bc it means no hemming (Don’t worry. I’m going to go over the math on how to know exactly how much you need. )
  • 5-7 yards of tulle for the 4 layers. (This is for 54-60 wide fabric. If you’re going to be using a smaller width fabric you’re going to need to use about twice as much.)
  • Elastic. I would not recommend anything smaller than 1 1/2″ bc we’re going to be using it to gather the fabric for us.
  • Thread that matches your fabric and elastic. (Unless you’re lazy like me and only use one that matches the elastic.)
  • Pins
  • Flexible measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Calculator to do some simple math
  • Marking tool of some kind
  • Sewing Machine or hand sewing needle.

Alright, let’s start with the math. This tutu is basically a 5 layered circle skirt. Circle skirts are one of the easiest things to master. If you already know how to make a circle skirt go ahead and skip to the tutu making. If not, I’m going to show you the the long way to do the math and then the easy way.

Sewing Quickie: Reading A Bolt of Fabric

Hey!

So I thought this would be a fun series to do when sharing some basic things about sewing. Also, I wanted to find a way to use the word quickie in a title.  Sewing can seem really overwhelming when you don’t have someone to hold your hand. Lucky you have me!

Alright, on to the good stuff.

reading a fabric bolt 1

When you go to the fabric store or a store that sells fabric, most of the fabric will be on a bolt. One end of it will look something like this. It’s going to have a lot of info that will be important to you when you’re looking at what fabric to buy. They may be formatted a little differently but if you know what you’re looking for it will be easy to find.

Reading a fabric Bolt 2

From the top, you see the manufacturer and below that you see the care instructions for this specific fabric.

Reading a fabric bolt 3

Next up, reading from the top down:

  • We have the width, which is SUPER important in knowing how much fabric you need to buy. When you’re reading the back of a pattern there can be a huge difference in the amounts needed depending on the width.
  • Material. You see that this is 100% cotton, but if it were a blend of some type they’d list the materials and what percentage of each is in it. Ex: 60% cotton, 36% polyester, and 4%spandex
  • Style: it will have a specific number for it and you can use it to see if you can find more. (Like there could not be enough in the store or something. Or you know someone who would love this fabric.)
  • Color: I think you understand this, right?
  • Yards: This is important if you are buying in bulk. NOT EVERY BOLT HAS THE SAME AMOUNT SO CHECK IT BEFORE YOU BUY! I’ve seen brand new bolts of the same fabric from the same manufacturer have a 5 yard difference in amount. Please, please, check before you buy. And if you’re wondering when you’d ever need that much fabric, just look at the back of a steampunk/victorian costume pattern and see. It’s a lot.

After that there are just odds and ends, like where the fabric was made and how much it costs. lol That’s kind of a big one. Anywho I hope that helps with your cosplaying and sewing endeavors. If you have any questions ask away and I will do my best to answer!

Cosplay With Me: Foundation Garments

Hey all!

I’m back again to give more tips, tricks and helpful hints for cosplaying. This time I chose a somewhat touchy topic but valid none the less. Before I get into it I want to be very, very clear that this post isn’t about having the “right” body or meant for everyday wear. It’s about loving *your* body and helping you get a clean looking cosplay no matter the size. Every body is beautiful, K? And, like always, this topic is for both men and women.

That being said, let’s get real here for a second. Spandex/Lycra leaves little to the imagination and are not forgiving in the least.  Doesn’t matter if you’re a size 0 because it will show everything. Having the proper foundation can help you get the polished look you want.

What are foundation garments?

Source

Source

They come in all shapes and sizes to fit your needs. They can be as simple as the right bra and underwear to body shapers and dancers belts. It really depends on the cosplay you choose. Not many call for a full body shaper. Those tend to be mainly used with the spandex jumpsuits.  AKA 90% of the female superhero’s costumes out there.

Bras
A good bra is worth it’s weight in gold (it tends to cost that much too.) but you may need something a little out of the norm when looking for one specific to your cosplay. What do I mean? Well, some may call for some extra padding while others may need it to look like you have less than you do. Push up bras can be found in almost any store that sells undergarments.  This is something I STRONGLY recommend going to the store first before you buy to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Compression Bras are what you tend to use when you want to minimize the appearance of breast. They can be as simple as a sports bra all the way to a medical grade one. (Those are more often used in the recovery of surgeries and treatment of circulatory issues.) An ace bandage can also be use but you should NOT wear it any longer than 8 hours.  It could cause damage to your body if you do. PLEASE don’t use duct tape or any other kind of tape. They’re not made for skin and can cause some really lasting damage.  Take care of yourself, K?

Undies
Now I know it seems kind of silly to even bring this up but believe it or not it can make a big difference to the over all look of the costume. Underwear lines can take away from the detail work of the costume.

Thongs are an option but be sure to avoid the embellished ones. Sure, you may not have the normal lines but that giant bow will not look right either, know what mean?

I’m personally a fan of the seamless boyshorts. They don’t give me any unwanted lines and are a little more comfy for me to wear. Again, it’s all down to personal preference on what you feel most comfortable in.

For the fellas out there who plan on wearing spandex suits, may I recommend adding a dancer’s belt to your cosplay. I understand if it makes you turn your head a little when you look at it but it will help your look. Most superhero men look like ken dolls, and it can be distracting when a cosplayer skips this step.

Male work out shorts

If a dancer’s belt is not for you spandex workout shorts are also another option. They may give you visible lines around your mid-thigh to knee but they get the job done.

I’m going to get real here for a sec. I saw the most AMAZING Superman last year. I swear he looked like he stepped right out of the pages of the comic. He was pure muscle and it wasn’t a padded suit either. I could see everything and I do mean everything. He went from being approachable to very off putting and slightly creepy in one fell swoop. I know it’s unfair but I live in a country where my personal safety is very much my own responsibility. Something like this where a man is exposed, no matter how innocent, is what I’ve been trained to avoid out of pure survival. I believe this is exactly why the male superhero’s look like Ken doll’s. It allows them to be strong without being threatening.

Body Shaper
Moving on. Body shapers on spandex garments that smooth and shape your body. I tend to look here first to see if they have what I’m looking for and more often than not they do. (Search with “shaper” and it’ll pull up what you’re looking for.) They come in all shapes and cuts to fit what you need for a specific cosplay. They can be hell to put on though so don’t feel bad if it takes you a few tries. (I almost gave myself a concussion the first I put one on.)

Bodysuit

If you’re not looking for something quite so tight and more smoothing, give body tights for dancers a try. They help smooth things over while not being quite as constricting as the shapers.

Shapers aren’t only used for smoothing and slimming. They can also be used to enhance different areas. There are bust/posture ones to help with those areas. While you can also get one that’s padded to help enhance your booty!

Corsets
This is probably the last one you’ll need in relation to cosplay. I have to be honest; I know very little about corsets, but fear not! The Lingerie Addict did an AMAZING breakdown on how to find a great corset while dispelling common misconceptions. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re in need of one.

I hope this was helpful and informative. Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer!

Cosplay With Me: Makeup

IMG_20130721_155511

Hey Everyone, Mel here!  So a couple months back I did a write up for the Keysmash Blog on cosplay. It was more of an into into the world and I had a bunch of fun sharing my take on it. Ever since then I’ve been thinking about all the the things I left out or should have said. (Other people do that too right?) Anywho, I realized I could totally do that here! (I’m slow on up take ok?)

Why makeup? Why not?! I have to start somewhere and why not with something I kind of know about. I am in no way a guru or an expert but I’m gonna share what I know. See if it works you. 🙂

Alright, first things first: Why wear makeup at all?

AniMonday: Attack On Titan

With a title like that, you can bet this episode would be interesting. The female Titan is closing  in on Levi and Co. And the rear guard in charge of protecting Eren is dying, female Titan crushing them like bugs. Eren is about to go on a rampage, he’s so upset, because all they’re doing is running. No one knows Erwin’s plans but Eren can do something.

He’s seconds away from biting his hand to transform, when the rest of the squad sees and yells at him to stop. Levi tells Eren has to choose between trusting himself with his Titan powers or trusting his squad.
